IMs and Technology Tools Used in Teaching and Learning Geometry

Technology has been used in everyday life during the fourth industrial revolution. Technology has also been used in the teaching of mathematics in junior high school. Even though its use in the classroom is still limited, some teachers can already use technology as a media. According to some researchers, the use of technology-based learning media is limited (Amir & Zari, 2018).

Technology is extremely beneficial to math learning. The use of technology in the form of instructional media has a positive impact on the cognitive and affective development of students. The teacher can use technology to help students develop a positive attitude toward mathematics (Lu'luilmaknun et al., 2021).

Some IMs and technology tools used in teaching and learning geometry according to Lolli (2012):

1. SMART Board
  • A teacher can use the SMART board to create detailed diagrams ahead of time. It allows students to see pictures and interact with them in ways that a chalkboard does not. It allows the student to draw and manipulate shapes in a way that allows them to clearly see what is going on. Its interactive features save time and allow for a more in-depth understanding of concepts. Using it to highlight specific features of geometric figures and the ability to show a 3-dimensional shape rather than drawing it helps students visualize the concept more effectively. The SMART Board allows students to participate in class in an interactive manner. It also improves their ability to SEE geometry.
2. PowerPoint
  • The PowerPoint slideshow allows the teacher to introduce new material and to review old material. It enables the teacher to review quickly by skipping through slides that the students have already seen a few days or even weeks ago
3. Elmo Document Camera
  • Elmo is a multimedia document camera that can spin around and capture any angle the teacher desires. This document camera is an excellent addition to any classroom for demonstrating documents or enlarging small objects through powerful zooming, among other things. Elmo document camera can be connected to a projector, a PC, or a television. The teacher can use a computer to capture images or record a presentation that can later be used to create high-impact teaching materials. This document camera can also be used to create Microvideo.
4. Geometer's Sketchpad
  • The Geometer's Sketchpad is a commercial interactive geometry software program that allows you to experiment with Euclidean geometry, algebra, calculus, and other areas of mathematics. Geometric figures can be constructed and manipulated using dynamic geometry software such as Geometer's Sketchpad. Such software can assist you in discovering relationships between geometric figures, searching for invariants (constant properties), and clarifying the early stages of geometric proof.
5. GeoGebra
  • GeoGebra can be used as a presentation tool, to create animations, and many other things. It makes a significant difference in student learning and frequently drives the geometry concept home for students. A teacher uploaded images from the 'real world' into the program and instructed her students to use figures to explore and find geometry in the images. GeoGebra is a useful application for improving and enriching mathematics teaching and learning by allowing students to visualize mathematical concepts, which is extremely useful for mathematical experiments and discoveries at all educational levels.
These are just a few of the technological tools that teachers believe can help students learn geometry. These technologies should be investigated further in future studies so that broad claims can be made and plans can be put in place to provide the most beneficial technology for student learning in every geometry classroom.
